Tōmyō (Twilight) by Michito Taniguchi

Michito Taniguchi, born in 1988 in Tottori in the Chūgoku province, is an emerging artist on the bamboo arts scene in Japan.

Trained like many of his peers at the Ōita Institute of Technology, then graduated from the Beppu Institute of Industrial Arts and Technology, he apprenticed with the artist Nakatomi Hajime in the small town of Takeda (prefecture of Ōita).

Now an independent artist, Taniguchi Michito infuses his works with the memory of the gods of Japanese antiquity and forgotten deities through a complex and energetic braiding style. He is also moved by emotion when he comes across objects abandoned by the sea on a beach. “Shells, stones, bottles and driftwood with mysterious shapes give meaning to my life. I wonder about their history. Even though I don't know anything about their past, they are precious as is. My heart is excited by this nostalgic feeling of keeping track of the past which leads me to create new forms."
