Born in 1993 on Sado Island in Niigata Prefecture, Honma Koichi belongs to one of the major lineages of contemporary Japanese bamboo artists. The son of master Honma Hideaki, he grew up in an environment deeply shaped by bamboo tradition, before fully embracing this heritage by entering formal training.

In 2018, he enrolled in the Oita Prefectural Bamboo Craft Training Center, Japan’s leading institution in the field. His talent became evident during his studies: in 2020, he received the Special Award / Beppu City Mayor’s Award at the 56th Living with Bamboo Art Exhibition. That same year, after graduating, he joined the family workshop, Honma Kougei, where he continued his apprenticeship under his father, who officially became his mentor.

Koichi quickly established himself as a distinctive voice in contemporary bamboo art. Within just a few years, he developed a personal, precise, and highly refined style that earned him several national recognitions. In 2021, he was selected for multiple major exhibitions:
– 59th Japan Modern Contemporary Art Contest
– 75th Niigata Prefecture Museum Exhibition
– 8th Japan Fine Art Exhibition

That same year, he received two significant regional distinctions: the Niigata Prefectural Governor’s Award at the Niigata Modern and Contemporary Art Exhibition, and the Mayor’s Award at the 18th Sado City Exhibition.

In 2023, he became the youngest artist ever nominated for the Mingei Bamboo Prize, highlighting the meteoric rise of this new figure in Japanese bamboo art.

Today, Honma Koichi lives and works on his native island of Sado, where he continues to explore the possibilities of bamboo with a maturity far beyond his years — confirming that “true talent does not wait for age.”
