Wooden noh mask
Unsigned, anonymous carver
Japan, Edo period, 19th century
Kurohige literally means “black beard”. As the name indicates, the mask has a remarkable black beard. The mask Kurohige symbolizes a dragon god. The lower part of the face is turned up because the chin is protruded. The both edges of mouth slant up, which is rather rare for this kind of mask. It gives a jocular impression.
