Ishikawa Shoun became a disciple of the master Iizuka Rokansai soon after he had graduated from an elementary school. After becoming independent, he created high quality baskets and won many prizes such as the Art Exhibition Commemorating 2600 years of Reign of the Imperial House in 1940. In 1970, he was designated an Important Intangible Cultural Asset of his birthplace, Awano-cho, Tochigi prefecture, and the city held a posthumous retrospective exhibition of his works in 1996.
