Ueda Shōunsai was a disciple of Tanabe Chikuunsai I. This boat-shaped (funagata) basket with an amazing patina was made in hōbichiku or “Phoenix tail bamboo”, a Japanese term to describe any variety of nemagaridake that has darkened naturally through decades of exposure to smoke from a kitchen hearth, and ratan, with selected technique: hemp leaf plaiting.
