Tanabe Chikuunsai I (1877-1937)

Born June 3, 1877, and named Tsuneo at birth, Chikuunsai I was the son of a physician serving the Settsu Amagasaki clan (in what is now Hyōgo Prefecture). He became the disciple of Wada Waichisai I, with whom he learned the art of bamboo basketry and is noted for the quality of his works in the Chinese style, karamono utsushi. Active in Osaka, he died on May 26th, 1937.
